Ralph was a farmer and the owner of Onecote Grange Farm, Onecote in Staffordshire and later of Hay House, Ipstones Stoke on Trent (the pottery town) which is high and bleak with stone walls instead of hedges.

He married Anne Billinge on October 21th, 1812 in Saint Edward's Church, Leek, Staffordshire, England.

Between 1812 and 1839 they had 8 boys and 7 girls. Their children in the order of their births were Mary, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Anna, Thomas, William, Jane, Ralph, George, Richard, Edmund, Ellen, James, Bernard and Caroline.
