PIONEER ODESSA RESIDENT DIES

Mrs.J.J.(Elizabeth)Amburgey,died at her home at 1407 East 17th Wednesday afternoon after a short illness,she was 95. Mrs.Amburgey had been a resident of Odessa 73 years,she watched the city spread over once barren ranch land from what use to be a small train depot to the now thriving hub of West Texas.Last year,Mrs.Amburgey was proclaimed the oldest citizen of Ector Co.during a Chamber of Commerce Senior Citizen's Day.She and her husband J.J.Amburgey,were among Odessa's founders.Her husband signed the City's Charter and was a charter member of the Odessa Masonic Lodge.Prior to her death,Mrs.Amburgey,was the only surviving Charter Member of the Order Of The Eastern Star number 447 here.An Odessa street is named for the family.
She was born December 19,1871 in Knott Co.Kentucky, and married Amburgey on January 10,1893.Her husband had started west in 1883 from Kentucky and stopped at Big Spring,then settled in what is now Monahans in 1893,when the town was little more than a depot.By 1908 the Amburgey's had retired from ranching,and moved here to Odessa,so their five children all born here could attend school.The Amburgey's original Odessa home was at the corner of 5th.and Lee,where they lived untill 1946.The second home was at 2006 N.Washington,where a son still resides.Mrs.Amburgey was a member of the First Baptist Church.Funeral services will be conducted at 2p.m.Friday in the First Baptist Church by Dr.John Rasco,pastor.Burial will be at Odessa Cemetery,beside her husband.Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Survivors include 2 sons,Floyd 1403 E.17th,and Ward,2006 N. Washington;3 daughters,Mrs.Annie Maye Boulware of Miles City,Montana,and Mrs.Mary Alta Wineburg of Gilmer,and Mrs. Elizabeth Davis of Midland,two brothers,Ira J.Francis of Hindman,Ky.,and Will Francis of Datona Beach,Fl.2 sisters, Mrs.Alice Johnson of Carr,Ky.,and Mrs.Cynthia Taylor of Hindman Ky.,10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
