A descendant has told us that they were 3 of 11 children of Henry (1801-1876) and Ester (Bates) Frantz who lived in a home that was noted in the 1875 map near Manada Gap.

The son of Henry & Esther (Betz) Frantz, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in West Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 6' 0" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg at the stated age of twenty-three September 2, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Muddy Branch, Montgomery County, Maryland, as a private with Co. D, 46th Pennsylvania Infantry. Captured during the 1863 Chancellorsville campaign allegedly on May 2, his parole date is as yet unknown, but that battle's prisoners generally were released by month's end. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 4, 1864, at Decherd, Tennessee, and honorably discharged with his company July 16, 1865. His brother Henry Clay Frantz had enlisted with him, and brother Alexander joined the regiment in February 1864.
After the war, he married Amanda Earley and fathered Ida J. (b. 05/04/69 - married William C. Shuey and William Addison Hershey), Harvey F. (b. 12/26/72), and Nora E. (b. 03/20/75 - married Amatus H. Cassel). He was a member of Harrisburg's Simmons Post No. 116, G.A.R.
Although the birth year used in this post is 1834, it is almost certainly not true. His stated age at enlistment - he no reason to lie - suggests ca. 1838, the 1860 census lists him as a twenty-two-year-old, 1870 has him at thirty-three, and 1880 claims thirty-eight. His obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph tosses a monkey wrench into the temporal discussion by claiming he died at age sixty-five, i.e., a ca. 1830 birth year for which no corroboration was located.
The Memorial Manager notes the inscription on his grave stone that he died at 60y 8m 9d. His birth date is calculated from that.
