Midnite was a long-lived male cat in Olivia's backyard, and the father of my dear cat Jasper, the longest lived of any of my cats. He was also the father of another of my cats, the dear departed Katey Lou.

Midnite gave Jasper his dark, slim good looks, but not his small build. Jasper is tall foot-to-head and has a long torso from nose to tail, while Midnite was very small, so small I wondered how he managed to father all the kittens Olivia told me he had. He must have been quite the banty rooster.

When I first met Midnite I immediately could see the resemblance. Midnite had a strikingly shiny tar-black coat, just like Jasper's, close to patent leather in reflective quality. Midnite was skitty with fast reaction time, a true alley cat, and Jasper too has quick reflexes. Katey also had gorgeous black shiny fur like her father, but hers was thick, and she too was quick and high strung. Both of Midnite's kids that I had in my family were smart and loving. All three cats had endearing downturned noses, like if you stuck your thumb in putty.

I recall Olivia telling me that when Midnite died he was 16 or 18, amazing for any cat, but especially an outdoor one. Jasper's mom Tiger, also lived a long life, so I had great hopes for my Jazz living a long life, which he did. I was hoping all those good genes would make him a heck of a good patriarch for my other adopted cats for years to come, and indeed, they did.

Midnite fathered many kittens, but I link him with Tiger since they parented Jasper together.

I wish there were a better picture of Midnite, but this is the only one Olivia had. Here, in 1998, Midnite's hiding inside a plastic swan Olivia had on her back fence.
