Montreal Mayor. Born in East Broughton, Quebec, Fournier studied law at McGill University and the Université de Montreal. In 1935, while he was still a law student, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons representing Mainsonneuve-Rosemont until 1953. He was then appointed to the Senate of Canada on the recommendation of Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent, a post he held until his death from cancer in 1980. In 1957 he was also elected the 38th Mayor of Montreal, defeating incumbent mayor Jean Drapeau, serving until 1960 when Drapeau was re-elected. In Drapeau's nearly thirty years as mayor, Fournier was the only candidate to have ever defeated him in an election.
