Phillip Jerome Watterberg was born March 3, 1910, in Breckenridge, Minnesota. He attended grade and Minneapolis Central High in Minneapolis. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in Forestry and Game Management. He worked as a laboratory assistant in Game Management. While there he was a member of the University and State Rifle teams. After graduation, he was employed by the research branch of the forest service in several forests and shelterbelts.
While attending classes in forestry, he became very interested in general horticulture and especially fruit growing, which led him later on to go into orcharding with his parents at St. Peter in 1944.
In the fall of 1944, Phillip went into the Navy and came out in 1946 as an E.T.M. 3/c.
After his discharge, he went back to the University studying for a B.M.E. degree in design. He was a laboratory assistant in forging, heat treating and welding while there. He graduated in 1947.
After his father's death in November 1970, Phil and his brother John sold their parents' home and Phil moved to St. Peter and roomed with his aunt Ella Nelson for several years while working on his orchard. He has been designing and building his own house at the orchard since 1975.
Phillip died July 8, 1985 in Sibley County, Minnesota. He is buried in Norseland Lutheran Cemetery, MN.
