Fritz Albert Watterberg was born October 11, 1875, in Daretorp parish, Sweden, the second son of John and Lotta Watterberg. The Watterbergs arrived in America during the summer of 1879. Four years later in the spring of 1883, they moved onto their homestead in Wilkin County, Minnesota, where Fritz grew to manhood helping his father with the many chores on the farm. Fritz graduated from Normal School at Moorhead. He later taught in Deerhorn township school which at that time included all grades.
Fritz ran for Wilkin County Treasurer and lost. Then he helped build bridges in Minnesota and North Dakota. While working on bridge construction, he county treasurer opponent died. The county commissioners then offered the job to Fritz who then became County Treasurer for several years before moving to Minneapolis.
On February 6, 1905, Fritz married Jennie Louise Johnson at Norseland, Minnesota. They had two sons: Phillip Jerome Watterberg born March 3, 1910, and John Per Ellis Watterberg born November 20, 1915.
Fritz dealt in real estate for a few years and then went to work at the Motor Vehicle Department of the State of Minnesota, and continued there until he retired many years later. He and his family moved to Excelsior, Minnesota, in the spring of 1929 where he lived until his death.
After his retirement, Fritz, Jennie and Phillip started an orchard near St. Peter, Minnesota. In 1947, they started building a new house at Excelsior. Jennie developed the plan but died January 5, 1950, before the house was finished. Fritz and Phillip lived there until Fritz's death November 11, 1970 at the age of 95. The house was then sold and Phil moved to the orchard in 1973.
