He was born February 21, 1914, in Gum Springs, Arkansas, a son of the late Milton Merritt and Ora Owen. He received his education in Searcy, Ar., where he attended Searcy High School. He served in the United States Army and World War II before moving to Pine Bluff in 1946.
Mr. Merritt went to work for The Kroger Co. and remained employed there until retiring in 1974 as the store manager.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eugenia Merritt, and two brothers, John Merritt of Searcy and Milton Merritt of Conway.
He was a member of Hawley Memorial United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son.
