James Benedict, a well-known and highly respected citizen of Waynesboro died at 1:20 o'clock this morning at his residence, 153 South Church street. He would have been 78 years old on March 8th next. Death was due to Brights disease with which he was confined to bed for the last four weeks. He was first attacked with the disease the latter part of last May, and he lay for weeks thereafter in a very critical condition. He never regained his health.
Mr. Benedict was the son of Abram Benedict and was born near Quincy. In his youth the family moved to near Lemaster where he resided a number of years. Mr. Benedict was a farmer by occupation and was thus engaged till he removed to Waynesboro in Dec. 1882, coming here from southwest of Mercersburg. Prior to last June he was employed in the shops of the Geiser Mfg. Co. for seven years.
Mr. benedict was a member of thee German Baptist church for forty years and was faithful and zealous in her cause. He was honest, industrious and upright and was a kind and affectionate husband and father and a firm friend. His death will be widely lamented by the many who knew him and esteemed him.
Mr. Benedict is survived by his widow and nine children: J. Oellig, H. Milton, S. Allison and Mrs. A. R. Deardorff, this city; Mrs. W. I. Book, Gettysburg; Misses Martha A., Mary E., Susan M. and Lucy I., at home; also these brothers and sisters: John Benedict, Herington, Kans.; Joshua, Lemaster; Mrs. Andrew Kriner, Williamson; Mrs. David Bricker, Polkton, N. C.
It is a sad coincidence that Mr. Benedict's other sister, Mrs. John Butterbaugh, of Nebraska City., Nebraska died on Monday of this week.
Funeral Monday afternoon promptly at one o'clock in the German Baptist church; interment in Green Hill cemetery.
