Enlisted as a private in Co. F, 5th Indiana Cavalry, on Feb 20, 1864; transferred to Co. C, 6th Indiana Cavalry. Mustered out on Sep 15, 1865.
Joseph died 18 months after the end of the Civil War, leaving Sarah to raise 6 children. In 1880 Sarah was living in Duck Creek, Madison Co., Indiana with her 2 youngest children Thomas and Mary. It is not yet clear if Joseph died of injuries or one of the common diseases that afflicted many Civil War soldiers.
On 3/23/17, contributor Mark McCrady reported: used a book of readings done of this cemetery between 1929 and 2000 to locate where his grave was, and there is no longer a stone there. I searched the rest of the cemetery in case it got moved and did not see it.
