Robert Tubman was born April 3, 1850 in County Down, Ireland, the son of Henry Tubman (1819-1899) and Mary McKee Tubman (1830-1882). The following year, the family set sail for America. Traveling from Liverpool, England aboard the Meridian, they arrived in New York, New York on June 17, 1851.
As Robert grew to adulthood, he lived in Canton, Bradford Co., PA (1860 census), McIntyre Township, Lycoming Co., PA (1870 census), and McNett Township, Lycoming Co. (1880 census). In 1885, at the age of 35, he married Eleanor Moore "Ellen" Campbell, nine years his junior. In 1886, Robert's name appears in a Williamsport Directory as a Lycoming County farmer in Carpenter, PA.
Robert and Ellen raised one son and four daughters:
