Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Louis and Rose Gardner Aqua and was a graduate of GAR High School, Wilkes-Barre, attended Scranton University, and received his DDS degree at the University of Pittsburgh Dental School.
Herman served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal. Dr. Aqua was a member of many organizations, including the American Dental Association, the Pennsylvania Dental Association (past president), a member of the former Anshe Emes Synagogue, the former United Orthodox, a member of Congregation Ohav Zedek, and was an active member of Ahavas Achim of Luzerne.
He served on the board and was past president of the Luzerne County Dental Society and Trustee of the Third District Dental Society. Other organizations included serving as president of United Rehabilitation Services (URS), LUZARC, and Luzerne's Commission on Economic Opportunity.
Dr Aqua was also a member of the Luzerne Lions Club, numerous coin collecting clubs, and many other civic and religious organizations.
He was preceded in death by siblings Joseph, Isadore, Jack, Abe and Molly.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Bhaerman; children, Harold (Hal) and his wife, Risa, Denver, Colo.; Karen Aqua and her husband, Ken Field, Cambridge, Mass.; Marlene Aqua, Northfield, N.J.; and Ellen Hart and her husband, Dave, Stanford, Conn.; and seven grandchildren, Zoe, Annie, Taylor, Trevor, Emma, Aidan and Lucy; as well as nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at noon today, Jan. 20, 2010, at the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi Raphael Nemetsky officiating.
Interment will be in Anshe Emes Cemetery, Plains.
Shiva will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today; Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.; Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m.; Saturday, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Sunday and Monday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at 100 Dunn Street, Forty Fort.
