A Pioneer Gone.

Arthur Bass, the subject of this sketch, was born December 8th, 1792, in Randolph County, North Carolina, and emigrated to this state in the year 1826. He lived in Hensley township from that time to the day of his death, which sad event took place on the 18th day of April, 1881. As will be readily seen, he was one of the first settlers of this county, and was well acquainted with the hardships and privation incident to the life of a pioneer. He was a man of untiring energy and devoted himself to the conduct of a large farm which he himself had cleared and from which he derived a comfortable support for himself and family. In religion, he was a Baptist; in politics, a democrat; and in every relation that he sustained to others, an honest man. Such was his life that all respected him, and would fain regret his death except for that better life that now is his. The funeral took place at the Baptist Church which is built on ground donated by him to the church. The service was delivered by Elder E. D. Herod, to a large and attentive audience, from I Peter, I., 24 after which the remains were interred in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Arthur was not married to Rebecca Nance- He married Rebecca Brookshire. She is buried at Bethlehem Row 14 stone 23, next to their daughter Malinda.
