Funeral Service: 10:30 AM Monday, December 28, 2009 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Maynard with Rev. Ian Wolfe officiating. Visitation: 2:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Maynard and for one hour before services at the church on Monday. Interment: Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard, Iowa with military rites by the Lundbye-Carpenter American Legion Post #245. A Memorial Fund has been established for the Heart of Iowa Hospice. Aaron Schlegel was born on May 6, 1923 at Hawkeye, Iowa, the son of Aaron George & Mathilda Marie (Lenz) Schlegel. Aaron graduated from Maynard High School in 1940. Aaron met Vera Jean Miehe while he was a farm hand for her father, John Miehe. They married on July 16, 1943 at Maynard, Iowa. Aaron worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing in Waterloo and then served in the Navy Air Force during W.W. II. After the war he returned to Chamberlain's and then owned and operated Schlegel Garage in Maynard from 1948 to 1953. He then worked at Sieg Auto Parts in Oelwein for 8 years from 1953 to 1960 and became the Maynard Postmaster in 1960. Aaron was postmaster for 25 years, until he retired in 1985. After his retirement he worked part time for NEOWA FS for 15 years.
Aaron was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he had previously served on the church council. He was also a member of the Maynard Historical Society and the Maynard American Legion Lundbye-Carpenter Post #245. Aaron previously served on the Maynard Town Council and was the Mayor from 1988 to 1992. He was a former West Central School Board Member.
Aaron is survived by his Wife: Jean Schlegel of Maynard; 2 Daughters: Diane Peshak of Safety Harbor, Florida and Cathy (Russ) Thoma of Gurnee, Illinois; 4 Grandchildren; 2 Great Grandchildren; Brother: Gerald (Lois Jean) Schlegel of Arvada, Colorado; 2 Sisters: Arlene (Nicholas) Riasanovsky of Berkley, California and Eleanor Behlke of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
