Jesse Stogdill was the son of Drewery and Martha (Acton) Stogdill. He married Martha Collier on May 15, 1851 in Jackson County, Indiana. To this union were born three sons, Charles Wesley Stogdill, Alonzo Stogdill, and Lewis Melvin Stogdill; and one daughter, Charlotte Stogdill. He enlisted as a private in the Union Army on 15 October 1861.
Jesse Stogdill died at home while serving with the Indiana Volunteers( Company B, 50th regiment) during the civil war. His older brother, Samuel Stogdill died a couple of months prior while serving in the same unit. Their younger brother, William Stogdill survived the Civil War. He served in a different company.
