Obituary
Sad Case of Accidental Shooting
Jacob Arey, aged about 21 years, son of George Arey living on the road leading to Rawley Springs 10 1/2 miles from Harrisonburg, was accidentally shot and killed 3 miles from his home, on Sunday afternoon last, about 1 o'clock. He was out hunting deer, on the top of what is known in that locality as "Dixon's Ridge," on the "second mountain," and a young man named Guyer, when the accident occurred, his brother and Guyer being near or at the same "stand" with him. He was standing with the butt of his gun (a double-barreled shot-gun charged with buckshot.) resting on a rock, leaning over, and both hands crossed upon it muzzle. Whilst in this position the gun slipped off the rock, both barrels, tearing off his righthand, lacerating the left, four shot-passing into the region of the lungs, and two into his head, producting death in about two hours, his death occurring on the mountain before he could reach home. He spoke but little after being shot, simply calling for water.
Mr. Arey was a single man, and had assisted his father in carrying the U.S. mail between Harrisonburg and Pendleton county, West Va.
His father's family share the sympathies of the neighborhood in this sudden and melancholy bereavement == Rockingham Register.
