Mattie was the eldest daughter of Noah Hefling and his third wife, Jane McCullough Cunningham. She was married in 1897 to George Gallaher and lived on a farm between Tippecanoe and Deersville, which he farmed. They had no children. Her mother lived with them until her death in 1902. In 1908, George hung himself in their barn, apparently due to his failing health, and Mattie continued to live on the farm until November of 1916. She had developed cancer and went to Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus for surgery, where she died. She left her estate to several of her nieces and her brother-in-law, James. At her death, she still owned part of the original land-grant farm of her grandfather, John Hefling, from 1821.
