January 27, 1911

Jonathan Smith died at his home in Johnson Friday noon, Jan. 20, 1911. Mr. Smith was born in Ohio in 1837, moved to Indiana at an early age and served during the Civil War as a member of the 26th Indiana infantry, U.S. Army. He came to Arkansas in 1901 and had resided in this vicinity since that time. His aged wife and one son, Arthur Smith, survive him. Uncle Jonathan had been in very poor health for a number of years but he bore his afflictions with great fortitude. He embraced Christianity at an early age and was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon by Rev. G.P. Hanks and then Uncle Jonathan was laid to rest in the Seymour graveyard.

A very nice monument came in to-day from J.V. Kent, Brookfield, Mo. to be erected at the grave of Jonathan Smith who died here last January and was buried in the Seymour cemetery.
