THE REV. WALTER KAELIN, WHO FOUNDED MISSION IN INDIA, DIES.
The Rev. Walter Kaelin, a Louisville native and Roman Catholic priest who founded a mission in India at an age when most people are retiring, died Tuesday in Houston, he was 88. Kaelin suffered a heart attack Tuesday after battling pneumonia for two months, according to his order, the Congregation of the Passion. Born on Dec. 11, 1916, he was baptized at St. Agnes Church, the Louisville parish that will hold his funeral tomorrow. Kaelin entered the Passionist order in the 1930s and was ordained in 1942. He served as provincial, or top administrator, of his Holy Cross Province from 1959 to 1962. He also served as rector of several monasteries. In 1980, at age 64, Kaelin was sent to southwestern India to help found a mission in an abandoned lumberyard. The mission later opened a seminary, an elementary school, a retreat center, a prison ministery and other programs. After returning to the United States in 1993, he continued to raise money for the mission. He lived at Sacred Heart Monastery on Newburg Road until last fall, when he was assigned to Houston. Kaelin was "still going till just two months ago," said the Rev. Michael Higgins, provincial for Holy Cross province. "He was certainly a witness to what a man of deep faith can do if he responds to God's call."
