This beautiful old Basler home was the last of several built by immigrant Benedict Eshleman in 1770. It most probably was built for his daughter Ann Eshleman, wife of Peter Roesch/ Resh who also occupied the home. Joseph Bastler/Basler Sr. obtained the home by deed in 1799 from John Resh, son of Peter Resh and wife Ann. Both Joseph Basler Sr. and Joseph Basler Jr. lived in the large house at the same time. Three stone inscriptions appear on the front of the old farm home.
High on the end of the old German barn is a stone circle "Joseph and Anna 1822". It is believed that Joseph's parents, Joseph Sr. and Esther lived there at the same time and are buried in the small Basler cemetery at the back of the property (no stones have been found for them), in 1980 there were only two remaining stones both in bad shape, they were, Jacob Basler (1798-1817) and Joseph Basler (1801-1817), both young son's of Joseph and Anna Basler
Note: The surname Basler was spelled with one "s" in my family. My father and grandfather Kendig always made a point of making that very clear. When I found and photographed the two gravestones of the Basler sons of Joseph Sr and Esther the spelling on those very old stones confirmed the spelling.
