Mr. Lanning was fatally shot by Nelsonville Patrolman Thomas
Cline who was responding to a complaint that Lanning was intoxicated. Cline was later charged with second degree murder.

Mr.Lanning was married to Viola Oiler. He was the father of
Leonard , Bessie (b.9-26-1891), Elizabeth Lanning Perry and Pearl (b.1898).
