He was a World War I veteran and was injured when he was struck in the head by a tree while apparently standing at a safe distance from where the woodmen were cutting. He suffered a bad concussion and died without regaining consciousness. He was standing nearby when a tree lodged in the fork of one nearby, and a third tree was then cut in a plan aiming at allowing the last tree to fall against the first and break its prop. When the third tree fell, it caused one of the first trees to break loose at the bottom and bounce about. As the trunk flew into the air it caught him in the back of the head.
