She was the daughter of the late Robert and Sarah Dearing of Stony Point, Doris was a life-long resident of the Charlottesville-Albemarle County area.
Doris received her education at the Albemarle Training School and then moved to the city of Charlottesville, where she married Floyd "Ooze" Lewis, Jr., her surviving husband of 56 years. She was preceded in death by siblings, John Dearing, Robert Lee Dearing, Agnes Wicks, Ethel Edloe, and Marie Scott.
Doris' original church home was the Evergreen Baptist Church in Proffit, and after marriage she was united with the First Baptist Church of Charlottesville on West Main Street where she served faithfully and contributed to church organizations such as the Calendar Club and Usher Board until her health failed her. Doris was also a member of the now defunct Lucky Twenty and Toppers social clubs.
In addition to her husband, surviving she leaves, two sons, Michael J. Lewis of McLean, VA and Mark L. Lewis of Arlington, VA; three grandchildren, Nicole Mitchell, Sara Lewis, and Matthew Lewis. Also, Doris leaves a nephew, John A. Dearing, who was raised with her like a brother, and a host of additional family members, as well as many caring friends and a number of kind caregivers.
A Funeral service was held Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at First Baptist Church, 623 West Main Street, Charlottesville, VA with the Dr. Alvin Edwards officiating.
Interment followed at Holly Memorial Gardens.
