Charles Brenneman was born May 8, 1838, in Washington Co., PA, the son of Henry and Tamar Brenneman. His father came to Henry Co., IN, in 1850, and settled three miles south of New Castle, Henry Co., IN, where his mother died in 1877 and his father in 1878.
Charles remained with his parents until manhood and received a common school education. He enlisted into the Civil War in what was known as the Benton Cadets, commanded by Colonel Marshall. The Cadets were detailed as Fremont's body guard, and Charles served three months. When he returned home, he engaged in farming and owned 120 acres of land, 80 of which was cultivated.
In September, 1862, he married Sarah E., the daughter of William and Mary Stinson, of Grant Co., IN. They had a family of two sons and five daughters.
Charles served two years as Assessor of Henry Township., Henry Co., IN.
