William VanderShaaf, 64, died at his ranch home near Manhattan Thursday afternoon.

He was born in July 1881, in the Netherlands and came to the United States at the age of ten. He has been a resident of the Holland settlement for 43 years.

He is survived by a cousin, Fred Ypma, who lives near Manhattan.

The remains are at the Dokken Funeral home and funeral arrangements are pending.

Note: William was born 03 July 1882 [not 1881 as shown on headstone] as Willem van der Schaaf in the dairy farmers village Winsum (in municipality Baarderadeel, since 1984 part of the new municipality Littenseradiel, in the middle of the Dutch northern province Friesland. His father, Wiebe van der Schaaf, is then a cattlekeeper (= veehouder, of dairy cow undoubtedly) and mother is Antje Douwes Kuperus.

At the age of 12 years William arrived on 23 March 1896 as Willem van der Schaaf with his parents and siblings Jacob (21 y, painter), Douwe (20 y, carpenter), Hielkje (18 y), Jan (16 y, baker), Geertje (14 y), and Jelle (11 y) on the SS Maasdam at New York, Ellis Island. Their destination was Passaic County in New Jersey.
