She was born Nov. 29, 1924, in Bergton, and was a daughter of the late Silas N. (Bud) and Minnie F. Whitmer Mathias.
She was a dispatcher for the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office before retiring. She was also a homemaker and had worked at A.W. Whitmore and Sons and the Riverside Restaurant.
She was a member of Linville Creek Church of the Brethren in Broadway and the Women's Fellowship at the church. She was a member of the Bridgewater Home Auxiliary, the Broadway Garden Club and the Cootes Store Home Extension.
On Dec. 5, 1942, she married C. Brown Shipe, who preceded her in death May 24, 1986.
Surviving are two sons, Gary L. Shipe and wife, Kay, of Waynesboro and John Wayne Shipe of Broadway; two daughters, Lana S. Allison of Timberville and Anita F. Caldwell of Timberville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving sibling of 11 children.
A son, Durwood B. Shipe, preceded her in death.
The Rev. Paul Roth will conduct a funeral service 1 p.m. Monday at the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.
