Anchorage resident Steven Waggoner, 58, died April 16, 2006, at Providence Alaska Medical Center of complications from a stem cell transplant. Visitation was at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St. A funeral was at the funeral home with the Rev. LaMar Vincent officiating. Burial with military honors was afterward at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Waggoner was born April 14, 1948, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Eugene and Helen Waggoner. After graduating from Lincoln High School, he attended Sioux Falls Community College and the University of South Dakota. Mr. Waggoner joined the U.S. Army in 1969, serving in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971. Among numerous commendations, he was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. In 1972, he transferred to Alaska and completed his military career in the Army National Guard, attaining the rank of sergeant first class as a helicopter crew chief and mechanic. He also owned and operated The Frame Up, an art framing business. He loved to spend summers in Resurrection Bay on his Seasport boat, "My Maria," with friends and family "chasing the big one," which often got away. His dream was to spend his retirement with his best friend and wife of 37 years, Kathy, on a 42-foot Nordic Tug. His family wrote, "We wish him 'calm seas and fair winds'!"

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Waggoner; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Geoff Bragg, and grandson Hayden Bragg, all of Alaska; daughter and son-in-law, Kristine and Christopher Krepel of Washington; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Roxie Waggoner, Dave and Ingrid Waggoner of Denver, Carol Quien of South Dakota, and Tom and Casey Waggoner of Fort Worth, Texas. His parents preceded him in death. Family suggests memorial donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
