Maurice and his wife Liliane were French mountaineers. After summitting K2 on June 23, 1986 Maurice and his wife went missing on the descent. Liliane's body was found a month later on a snow field around 17,500 ft; Maurice's was found in 1998, on a glacier above Base Camp. Both are now buried at the Gilkey Memorial at the base of K2.
