Dr. Ralph A. Kinsella Jr., former chief of staff of the old St. Louis City Hospital and former medical director of St. Louis University Hospital, died Tuesday (July 29, 2003) after a brief illness at St. Mary's Health Center in Richmond Heights. He was 84 and a lifelong resident of St. Louis.
Dr. Kinsella was born in St. Louis. His father, Dr. Ralph A. Kinsella Sr., was a medical professor and chief of St. Louis University's department of internal medicine and a founder of St. Mary's Health Center.
The younger Dr. Kinsella earned a medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1943. He served in the Army in World War II.
After the war, he became a faculty member of St. Louis University Medical School, which allowed him to indulge his love of teaching and research at what was then St. Louis City Hospital. He became the chief of service for internal medicine and chief of staff from 1980 until the hospital closed in 1985. He then became medical director at St. Louis University Hospital, a position he held until his retirement in 1994.
In 1947, he married Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Boyle, who had interned with him at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York.
A memorial service will be at noon Friday at Immacolata Catholic Church, 8900 Clayton Road in Richmond Heights. Dr. Kinsella donated his body to St. Louis University School of Medicine.
In addition to his wife, among survivors are three daughters, Mary Kinsella and Eileen Kinsella, both of St. Louis, and Dr. Maggie Kinsella of Bellingham, Wash.; four sons, John Kinsella and Mike Kinsella, both of St. Louis , Matt Kinsella of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Dr. Charlie Kinsella of Indianapolis; a sister, Mary Janet Kinsella of St. Louis; two brothers, Dr. Edward Kinsella and Dr. Peter Kinsella, both of St. Louis; and 11 grandchildren.
