Earl Cantone, 69, of rural Peotone, died suddenly Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at his home.
At the time of his death, Mr. Cantone was currently working for the Will County Sheriff's Office as a court security officer for River Valley Justice Center. He was a former Illinois state trooper, beginning his career on July 15, 1957 with District 5, Joliet and retiring October 19, 1969. He was also a former Illinois Secretary of State assistant superintendent and a former Peotone police officer.
He was past president of the Will County Police Chiefs Association, past commander of the Peotone American Legion Post 392, past commander of the Will County American Legion and past commander of the Peotone VFW Post 2243. Mr. Cantone served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was on the Eastern Will County Senior Services Board of Directors, a member of the Ridgewood Cycle Association and trustee and secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Peotone Fire Protection District since 1997.
He was born December 1, 1933, in Chicago, the son of Louis Sr. and Theresa Balzano Cantone. His parents are deceased. Surviving are 5 sons and daughters-in-law, Michael (Karen) Cantone, Anthony (Karen) Cantone, Guy (Barbara) Cantone, Paul (Jodi) Cantone, all of Peotone, Dean (Melanie) Cantone of Lemont; 2 daughters and one son-in-law, Carol Cantone and Andrea (Thomas) Kuzma, all of Peotone; grandchildren, Kyle, Chad and Ashley Cantone, David Cantone, Rachel (Martin) Eglar, Aimee and Meggen Cantone, Jackie, Priscilla and Courtney Cantone, Dominique Cantone, Vincent, Gemma and Joey Cantone and Andi and A.J. Kuzma; former wife, Mona Mae Guritz Cantone of Peotone; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Louis Jr. and Marge Cantone of Barrington; 5 sisters and 3 brothers-in-law, Gloria (Thomas) Keough of Orland Park, Nancy Antonacci of Romeoville, Betty (Ed) Soffel of Chicago Ridge, Carol (Ray) Wittekind and Barbara Callaghan, all of Chicago; 1 sister-in-law, Delores Cantone of Frankfort; and many nieces and nephews. One brother, John Cantone, is deceased.
Pallbearers will be Michael, Anthony, Guy, Paul and Dean Cantone and Thomas Kuzma. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons. Memorials may be made to the Liver Foundation for Kids or to the Peotone Fire Protection District.
Visitation was held from 2-9 p.m. Thursday at the Fedde-Helfrich Chapel, Peotone. A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Peotone. Father Michael Ginter officiated. Burial in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
