She was born Oct. 13, 1923 in Noble County, a daughter of Joseph R. and Grace G. (Kell) Hile. Her formative years were spent in Etna-Troy Township where she attended Troy Center School. She graduated from Larwill High School in 1941. She received her business degree from International Business College, Fort Wayne in 1942.
On March 25, 1950, she was united in marriage to John R. Rantz. They made their home in the Pierceton area. Mr. Rantz died in 1978.
She was employed as a bookkeeper for National Mill Supply from 1942 to 1957, Pierceton Press from 1968 to 1973 and Northern Gases from 1973 to 1975.
She was a member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, over 25 years with Eastern Star, Columbia City and P. Buckley Moss Society.
She is survived by a son, Peter R. Rantz (Connie Bachota), Pierceton and daughter, Katharine (Paul) Wuttke of Fletcher, N.C.; three grandchildren, Jenna (Craig) Jensen of Cromwell, Jordan Rantz of Muncie, Emma Wuttke of Fletcher, N.C.; two step-grandchildren, Keith Wuttke, of Charleston, S.C., Michael Wuttke of Ashville, N.C. and a former daughter-in-law, Teressa Kiser.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Joseph, Charles, Paul, Walter and Lewis Hile and five sisters, Emma Stark, Valentine Johnson, Mary Hile, Dorothy Simon and Ruth Richey.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial will be in Roann Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Whitley County Humane Shelter.
