Alfreda Ewing was the daughter of Jacob Wilson Ewing and Alice I. Lawson who were married 14 Jan 1866 in Cleveland, Alamakee, Iowa. She was 1 of 11 children born to the couple all of which were born in Allamakee, Iowa.

In 1895 she was 6 years old and living in Allamakee, Iowa with her parents and 8 of her siblings. They were George W Ewing 27, John H Ewing 25, Cleora Ewing 22, James Edward Ewing 16, William Stuart Ewing 13, Charles Wilson Ewing 10, Bertha Ewing 8, and Cora Orphelia Ewing 0.
Her sister Ella Ewing married Edwin "Eddie" Pettit on 17 Dec 1893 in Franklin, Allamakee, Iowa and is no longer living in the household.

1900 and Alfreda is living with her parents and 8 siblings in Franklin, Allamakee, Iowa (family 92/92). Her father is working as a farmer. Her mother says she has given birth to 11 children 10 of which are still living. The siblings remaining in the house are George W Ewing 31, James Edward Ewing 21, Elizabeth Ewing 18, William Stuart Ewing 18, Charles Wilson Ewing 15, Bertha Ewing 12, and Cora Orphelia Ewing 5. (note even though the census says Elizabeth Ewing is a daughter I believe she might not be. She wasn't in the 1885 state census and that would mean there were 11 living children not 10 as Alice states in both the 1900 and 1910 census.)

John H Ewing 30 married Martha Viola Dundee 22 Nov 1986 in Waukon, Allamakee, Iowa and was living right next door (family 91/91). Cleora Ewing 27, married Walter J White on 28 Jun 1889 in Postville, Allamakee County, Iowa and was living a short distance away (family 100/100).

On 23 Oct 1904 Alfreda marries Sylvanus Stephen Smith in Frederick, Tillman, Oklahoma.

27 Jul 1905 their first child George Stewart Smith is born in Postville, Allamakee, Iowa.

15 Feb 1907 their second child Leonard Bruce Smith is born in Hobart, Garfield, Oklahoma.

05 Jan 1909 their third child Cora Ella Smith is born in Meade, Meade County, Kansas

By 1910 Stephen her husband is 27 and living in Odee, Meade, Kansas and despite being married he is not living with his wife Alfreda now 21 and his 3 young children George Stewart Smith 5, Leonard Bruce Smith 3, and Cora Ella Smith 1. Instead he is living in the house of his employer where he works as a servant

In 1915 she is living in Franklin, Allamakee, Iowa with her husband and 4 of his 5 children. Leonard Bruce Smith 8, Cora Ella Smith 6 Sylbert Carlyn Smith 3, and Arthur Milburn Smith 1. It can only be assumed that George Stewart Smith who would be 10 must have passed away before this census.

12 Sep 1918 Stephen and Alfreda were living in Post, Allamakee, Iowa when Stephen registered for the draft. He listed his occupation as a farmer and his wife as the person who would always know where he was.

The 1920 census finds them still in Post, Allamakee, Iowa Stephen is still working as a farmer They now have 5 children living with them Leonard 12, Cora 11, Sylbert 7, Arthur Milburn 6 and Alice Helen Smith almost 2.

1925 finds her in Franklin, Allamakee, Iowa with Stephen, Leonard 17, Cora 16, Sylbert 12, Arthur Milburn 10, Alice 6, and Ivan Charles Smith 3.
