After recovery from childhood rheumatic fever, Joanne showed herself to be an intelligent and hightly motivated person. Upon completion of schooling at Northeast Senior High School in Kansas City, MO, she enrolled in Cemtral Missouri State University from which she was graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. She was employed as teacher at the Southwood Elementary School in Raytown, Missouri until her passing. The roll of the teacher, for her, did not end with time spent in the classroom. Joanne frequently attended events inwhich her students were participating, expecially the baseball games of the boys during the summer months. She was well remembered by former students over the span of her career who payed homage to her at her services.
