Joseph Henry Land was born in Irisburg Dist., Henry Co., Aug. 30, 1842. In June 1861 he enlisted in Co. A., 42nd Va. Inf. an soon became first Sergeant of his company. He engaged in the battles of Cedar Run, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Winchester, Bunker Hill and Gettysburg. He was captured May 12, 1844 at Spottsylvania Court House with 3,300 men and taken to Point Look Out, Md. and later transferred to Elmira, N. Y.
In Nov. 1866, he and (1st wife) Miss Eliza HOPPER were married. To their union were born the following children who survive: Mrs. J. A. HOPPER and Mrs. C. A. MEADOW, both of Reidsville, N.C.; J. H. LAND Jr. of Oklahoma.
In January 1892 he and Miss Sallie Shackelford (2nd wife) were married, but she lived only a short while afterwards.
In September 1895, he and Sarah RICHARDSON PRATT (3rd wife) were united in marriage, and to this union was born one child.
They lived in Reidsville, N. C.
At the time of his death he was living in the house of his daughter in Garham, N.C. He was active til the last, having fully dressed, gone to the bathroom on Sunday morning, August 23, 1925, where he fell as a result of a blood clot moving to his heart. He never regained consciousness, breathing out his last in a few moments. Interment was in Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, N.C., where his body sleeps beside that of his last wife [Sarah] who died last March.
