"Born, Bavaria, Germany, July 25, 1868, son of Sebastian and Barbara (Kuebeth) Oberst. Educated, Egg Harbor City public schools. Married Dec. 27, 1898, Caroline, daughter of Joseph and Caroline (Bub) Eisenbarth, of Egg Harbor City. Children: Jacob, 1899 (died, in infancy); Carolyn Mildred, Oct. 6, 1904; Lawrence Joseph, Aug. 2, 1907; Edward, Dec. 11, 1911; Doris, Aug. 22, 1921. Residence and business, 259 Chicago Ave., Egg Harbor City."

"Jacob Oberst is descended from an old German family, its members noted for their musical talent. His grandfather was a musician in Bavaria. His own father Sebastian Oberst, also lived in Bavaria, on the River Main. This member of the family was a merchant and, like his father, gifted with considerable musical talent. He was engaged in the lumber business, and used his musical talent to add to his income in a semi-professional way. In 1873 he emigrated to America, bringing with him his four sons, Andrew, George, Stephen and Jacob, of which Jacob is the only one living, and who was then just five years of age."

"He settled in the German colony at Egg Harbor City at the suggestion of his brother Lawrence, who came to the United States in 1854 and made his first home in Cincinnati, O. Lawrence resided in Cincinnati until the outbreak of the Civil War, during which he served the entire time as bandmaster of the Fifteenth Regiment, United States Army. After the close of the war he made Egg harbor City his home, and was so well pleased with the place that he sent for his brother, Sebastian. Sebastian Oberst planted extensive grape vineyards, later extending his operations to the manufacture of his produce into high grade wines. It was he who established the business that George Oberst, whose biography also appears in this book, controlled after his death."

"When Jacob Oberst was nineteen years of age, he took over the tailoring business of his deceased brother, George. Under his able, business like management, the establishment readily prospered until he was employing quite a few workmen to meet the requirements of the trade. Mr. Oberst was engaged in this business for thirty years before he finally decided to retire. During the World War period, he disposed of the establishment.

"Mr. Oberst's business interests were not confined to the tailoring vocation, for he has influential connections with several large enterprises, being a director in the Enterprise Gas Company and Atlantic County Electric Company and the Egg Harbor City Commercial Bank."

"Like his artistic forebears, Jacob Oberst is an accomplished performer in musical circles. He has been thoroughly trained from childhood to a keen appreciation of the art, a training that has endowed him with an ability to play the cornet with a rare and pleasing interpretation which is perfectly rendered through a splendid technique. His services as a cornetist have always been in demand. He started public recitals at seventeen years of age and at the early age of twenty, was elected to lead the Egg Harbor City Band-a position he still holds, being lately elected to serve his thirty-fifth term. He became a member of the Aurora Singing Socity when twenty-two years of age. This time honored organization celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 1907 and still continues its regular meetings. Mr. Oberst was also a familiar figure in the musical service of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, at Egg Harbor City, for over twenty years. He is a true musician, and loves his art, rendering a selection as only one can who feels a perfect sympathy with the vibrating notes."

"During the World War, Mr. Oberst, as leader of the city band, was a busy man taking care of the numerous calls that came for music for all patriotic ocasions."

"Member: Egg Harbor City Kiwanis Club; Egg Harbor City Band (leader); Aurora Singing Society. Politics: Republican. Religion: Roman Catholic. Recreations: music."
