Sterling Williams born February 1, 1927 to the late Estellar Gosa Williams and Ruben Williams. He was the second of eight children. Three siblings preceded him in death, Mary, Charles and Minnie. As a teenager Sterling came to Michigan where in 1945 he entered the United States army and served in Germany. Then in 1948 Sterling married Rose Nell Harris who preceded him in death in 1973.
Sterling was a religious man who served faithfully as as Trustee and Treasurer of Corinthian Baptist Church and a Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Christ Cornerstone M.B. Church both in Detroit.
Sterling was the first black minority entrepreneur painting contractor in the City of Detroit 53 years ago. He faced numerous obstacles, both workwise and racially, but he stood steadfast and accepted each and every hurdle that was put in his pathway, as a black businessman with a vision toward the future.
Throughout the years as the owner of S.W.Williams Painting Contractors, Inc. he worked tirelessly for the U.S. Government, General Services Administration,Internal Revenue Services, Veterans Administration, Worthsmith Air Force Base, K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Chrysler Corporation, Renaissance Center, Detroit City-County Building, Fox Theatre, Comerica Park, Tiger Stadium, Mich-Con, MGM Casino, Detroit Edison, Black African American Museum, UAW, numerous Detroit area churches, commercial buildings and the list goes on and on.
Sterling enjoyed life completely and did things that some people only dream of. One of the passions he enjoyed so well was flying his own plane after he obtained his pilot's license.
Sterling was the "Patriarch of the Williams Family". He demonstrated honor, integrity, character, love and dedication to family, friends, and his community. He went above and beyond the call of duty to support others. He was considered an "Ambassador of Good Will", because of his selfless acts of kindness to all mankind and for being a strong man of distinction.
Sterling slipped away quietly that Wednesday November 11, 2009.
His memory will be cherished by a devoted companion Janet Marshal and her son Charles, one daughter Maxine Thorpe, granddaughters Tanya and Yolanda (Tina deceased)seven great grandchildren, two (2) brothers Ruben and Odell, two (2) sisters Rosie and Essie, one brotherin-law Ernest, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and business associates who loved him.
