He enlisted in Co. H, 17th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on May 25, 1861 and received a gunshot wound in the calf of the left leg on October 21, 1861 in the Battle of Fredericktown, MO. He was discharged April 28, 1862, age 26, at Camp Stanton, IN. On May 17, 1888 his mother Christina, widow of Jesse Baker, applied for the pension and the death date of 1865 was given at this time.
