W. E. Thomas, a retired farmer and resident of Collingsworth county 46 years, died in an Amarillo hospital at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, January 11. He was 90 years of age.
Mr. Thomas remained active until the end of his life. On Wednesday, January 6, however, he received a broken hip in a fall at his home. He was taken to an Amarillo hospital, where his condition appeared to be improving. He died unexpectedly.
For many years, Mr. Thomas lived in the Buck Creek community, where he was active in its leadership. Besides his interest in his farming, which enabled him to become successful in it, he was interested in its school and in the church life of the community, which he served faithfully through the years.
Mr. Thomas was born Oct 5, 1874 in Hardin County, Tennessee. After coming to Texas, he lived in Lamar county until moving here in 1918.
On January 16, 1916, he was married to Miss Beulah Morrison at Amarillo.
The couple retired from farming nearly 25 years ago and since then had made their home in Wellington.
Mr. Thomas was a member of the Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr. Thomas are his wife and two sons, Weldon Basset Thomas of Amarillo and Olan Edward Thomas of Los Alamos, NM.
There are six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
One son, Lt. Melvin Keith Thomas, died in action during World War II.
