"James Allen, of Co. D, enrolled [72nd IN] Oct. 17, 1864 in Lafayette[IN} by Capt. Parks as a Private; mustered in Oct. 19, 1864 n Lafayette by Capt. Parks at age 23. He was 5’ 9.5” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. Born Oct. 24, 1840 in Ripley Co., MO, employed as a farmer. Mustered out at the end of the war Sep. 14, 1865 in Chattanooga, TN. Notes: A Private from 72nd IN Co. E before consolidating into 44th IN on Jul. 1, 1865. He filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #711981 Apr. 23, 1886. Married Cynthia Summers 1886 then Jane Smith 1923. Resident of Parke Co., IN 1850, Shelby Co., IL 1860-1870, Fayette Co., IL 1900-1933. Died there Nov 22, 1933 at Saint Elmo, Fayette Co., IL, and buried in Old Liberty Church Cemetery near Brownstown, IL."
