James married Matilda Crouch, September, 1895, in Vancouver, Washington, and to this union six children were born; Thelma, Henry L., Alice, Malinda Viola, and twins Harold Lee & Pearl Lucinda. Matilda died in 1910 and in 1916 James with daughters, Thelma and Pearl went to Goldendale to visit a cousin, Jeff Nelson. They liked the area so well they decided to make their home there. In 1918, James, was remarried to Nettie McKillip Burt, who had two grown daughters.

The picture to the right was home to the James Shepard family in Goldendale from 1918 until 1959 when daughter, Pearl, donated it to the Klickitat Historical Society. It is known as the Presby Mansion, so named after the original owner, Winthorp Presby.
