Henry was the grandson of Johann Heinrich Finis (1756-1814), who was born in the Holy Roman Empire and came to America in 1776 as a "Hessian" soldier. Captured by the Continental Army at Trenton, New Jersey, Johann spent years in Virginia before moving his family to Champaign County, Ohio, in 1812. (Champaign County at the time extended north to the Michigan Territory.) The surname was Americanized as "Venis" (VENN-iss) in the second generation, if not before. Descendants in Ohio now live in Clark, Fairfield, Knox, Licking, Miami, Montgomery, Sandusky, and Wood Counties.
