Egyptian Pharaoh. Beginning in 2332 BC, he ruled for approximately forty-four years during Egypt's Sixth Dynasty. He came to the throne after his brother, Usekare, murdered his father and attempted to usurp the throne. The support of powerful nobles allowed him to seize power, and their influence continued to grow throughout his reign, possibly leading to the eventual decline of royal power at the end of the Old Kingdom. He ordered military expeditions and oversaw the beginning of trade with the Lebanon and the Somalian coast, but is best known today for two large copper statues, very rare in Egyptian art, that represent Pepi and his son Merenre subduing Egypt's enemies. Among the many construction projects dating from his reign are a canal at the First Cataract of the Nile and his Pyramid at Saqqara.
