Vernie Gilbert was born on 23 Mar 1910 in Grove, Delaware, Oklahoma, the fifth of 15 children born to James Alfred Gilbert I and Alice Marie Layton Gilbert. He was married to Isabelle (MNU) and had a son and a daughter. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps on 30 Nov 1945 at Ft. Lewis, Washington. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea. He died of a brain aneurysm at the age of 48 years, on 19 Nov 1958, while stationed in Florida. He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
