LINES ON THE DEATH OF ARTHUR CROCKER

ACCIDENTALLY SHOT, JANUARY 3d, 1860

IN NEWARK, KENDALL CO., ILLINOIS

BY MISS S. M. L. SABIN.

Come all good people, far and near,
A mournful story you shall hear,
Concerning of a young man's fate,
Who lived in Illinois State.

'Twas Arthur Crocker,--one whose name
Was ever of the fairest fame.
In Kendall County, Newark Town,
He lived belov'd by all around.

He was his mother's youngest child;
On him she doted--on him smiled,
Her life seemed wrapped up in the boy--
He was her darling and her joy.

He had four sisters and a brother,
Who all there lived near to each other;
Excepting one who was away,
At home in Pennsylvania.

His hopes were bright, and gay was he--
The pet of all the family,
But life's gay scenes with him were done,
When he was scarcely twenty-one.
