The Atlin Claim, September 9, 1899, reported the death of Captain Johnson, a pilot of Alaskan waters for many years. He died on his way from Lituya Bay last Monday and was interred in Evergreen Cemetery on Tuesday. He and a man named Oliman were arrested on the Siberian coast two to three years ago and spent time in a Russian prison. During his lifetime he had many daring adventures. He had resided in Juneau for several years.

The Atlin Claim is in the British Columbia Historical Newspapers Library.

At the end of the actual article is printed "Juneau Truth". The Alaska Truth newspaper was published 1899-1900. The article about Captain Johnson may have been picked up and reprinted from that newspaper.

The date of death would have been September 4, 1899.
