Mr. George Verell (Vee) Holland, 85, of Hayti, died June 27, 1999, in Hayti. He was born on May 18, 1914, in Vina, Ala., the son of the late George and Ellie Emerson Holland.
Holland worked for the City of Hayti as grave digger and street superintendnt for 20 years and North Park Superintendent, where he took care of the animals in the zoo.
Holland was united in marriage to Ethel Powell on November 15, 1933, in Marion County, Ala. She preceded him in death on February 20, 1994. Also preceding him in death were the following: a son, Wayne Holland on March 31, 1984; two granddaughters, Diane Vermillion, on March 24, 1999, and Amanda Holland, on August 7, 1980; three brothers Johnny, Elvin, and Rufus; and four sisters: Rosebell, Missouri, Ira, and Earlou.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Wade and Wanda Holland of Hayti; a sister, Minnie Brewer of Vina, Ala.; twelve grandchildren, Rene Gibson and Leanne Moore, both of Caruthersville, George Ann Forester, Amy Lawson, and Janie Lawson, all of Portageville, Judy Smith, Randy Holland, Wade Holland, II, and Connie Smith of Hayti, Tina Clevenger, Kelly Caraway, and Stoney Holland of Kennett; 20 great grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren, and special friends and many nieces, nephews and a host of other friends.
Services were hld Tuesday, June 29, 1999, in the John W. German Funeral Home Chapel in Hayti, with Sister Florence Staggs officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Hayti.
