Betty Ryan McKay, 85, of Dubuque, passed away Friday, March 12, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, surrounded by loving family members.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, where friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 15. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. The Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St. is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Aug. 12, 1924, in Rochester, N.Y., daughter of Charles and Hilda (Horner) Ryan. She graduated from Nazareth Academy, Rochester, and Marymount College, Tarrytown, N.Y.

After college, she worked at Strong Memorial Hospital, where she met Richard V. McKay. They married in Rochester on April 24, 1948; he preceded her in death in 2002. Betty moved to Dubuque.

Betty's friends, neighbors and helpers meant the world to her and were a large reason for her continued love of life. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are four children and their families, Katharine and James Paulsen, of Victoria, Minn., Richard and Mary (Borley) McKay, of Dubuque, Liz and Fred Melloy, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Charles and Mary (Gregory) McKay, of Chandler, Ariz.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jenny and Mike Kozlowski, (Katharine, Claire and James), of Denver, Ryan and Lea Paulsen (Tully), of Elmhurst, Ill., Joel and Jenny McKay (Landon and Parker), of Dubuque, Andrew McKay, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Ross McKay, of Des Moines, Mackenzie Melloy and Theresa Melloy, of St. Paul, Minn., Peter Melloy, of Knoxville, and Lauren McKay, of Chandler; brother and sister-in-law, John and Sheila Ryan, of Rochester, N.Y.; in-laws, John and Jean McKay, of Marshalltown, Iowa, Joni McKay and Harriet McKay, both of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Jane Caines; and her parents.
