Justine Cunningham died peacefully, at the age of 88, on February 23, 2005. She was born Justine Louise Centomain in Trenton, New Jersey on May 12, 1916 to a large Catholic family who had immigrated from Italy in 1909. As a girl, Justine showed an aptitude for fashion and became an excellent seamstress. While Justine was attending Rutgers College in New Jersey, her older sister, Theresa, was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and the family doctor prescribed a move to Tucson, Arizona as a possible cure. Justine was assigned the role of chaperone to accompany her sister out west. In 1940, the two young women arrived and found jobs on the Davis Monthan Army Air Field in Tucson. It was there that each met her future husband. After a whirlwind-wartime courtship of three weeks, in 1942 Justine married a young pilot, James Bishop Beane II, who was destined to reach the rank of Lt. Colonel. Theresa later married Fred Pierucci of Santa Barbara. After the war, the two couples settled in Bakersfield. With her husband, Colonel Beane, who died in 1972, Justine reared three children. During 30 years of service, she worked faithfully for the California Highway Patrol as a secretary until her retirement in 1980. Justine was also an active member of the American Womens Business Association.
Following her retirement, Justine became an avid world traveler, taking trips to such diverse places as India, Spain, Greece and Hong Kong. She also went back to school at Bakersfield City College to pursue her love of the humanities and to perfect her already considerable skill in tailoring and dressmaking. At home, she improved her bridge playing skills with her friends. Justines great joy in this period overflowed in relation to her grandchildren, Naftali and Melina Rutter, who were born in 1980 and 1983 respectively, to her daughter, Virginia and son-in-law, Peter. In 1983, Justine moved north to Marin County to be near her grandchildren in their pre-school years, then returned to her friends in Bakersfield. There she met and, in 1988, married Dr. Norman Cunningham, of the Cunningham Animal Hospital. In their happy new life together, they traveled extensively and enjoyed dancing with the European Club.
Justine is survived by her husband, Dr. Norman Cunningham; her daughter, Virginia Beane Rutter and son-in-law, Dr. Peter Rutter of Mill Valley; her grandchildren, Naftali Beane Rutter and Melina Centomani Rutter of New York City; her son, James Bishop Beane III of Bakersfield; her daughter, Dr. Justine Bradford and son-in-law Errett Bradford of Lake Tahoe, Nevada; and her nephews, Richard Pierucci of Bakersfield and Ernest Pierucci of Lafayette and their families.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made to St. Philip the Apostle Church in her memory.
Visitation will begin Sunday at 12:00 noon at Greenlawn Mortuary.
