Marinus emigrated from Hoak in 1873. He left as a 26-year-old farmer's hand and gave as reason verbetering van bestaan (amelioration of existence).
On 31 May 1878 he married Johanna Maatje "Hannah" Hesselink, born "in a little log house east of the city on 24th Street" to Dutch Pioneers who in latter 1846 left Winterswijk with a large group of immigrants to settle "New Holland" in Michigan.
Four of their six children died very young. However, firstborn, "Jennie" Jansen Smith,
lived to be 102. The next baby died shorty after birth.
Then, in February 1886, Maatje Johanna "Maude" was almost two, and Jan "John" almost three, when they both died of croup
on the same day.
Four day old Baby Boy died in 1887. The sixth child, "Maude" Jansen Kooiker from whom my sons descend, died at the age of 78.
