Recitation of the Rosary for Marguerite M. Sartin will be 7pm Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Pendleton. Funeral Mass will be 10am Thursday at St. Mary Church with concluding services and burial at Olney Cemetery. Friends may call at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater until 5pm today and Wednesday or at the church after the rosary.

Mrs. Sartin, 80, of Milton-Freewater, died Saturday, May 21, 1994, at Elzora Manor Care Center. She was born Aug 29, 1913 at Boise, Idaho, to John and Winnie Bashor Blanchet. She grew up at Pilot Rock and attended a country school in Coombs Canyon near Pilot Rock. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Pendleton when she was in high school and after high school, she attended St. Anthony School of Nursing. She then joined the US Army where she served as a flight nurse, attaining the rank of captain. She flew in aircraft from Guam to the United States with wounded soldiers. She received an Award of Air Medal, a medal for Air Evacuation Flights and for 800 hours of flight time over water and for flights that were many times in combat zones. She served in the Army for 12 years and after her discharge worked as a nurse at El Paso, Texas, Portland, Pendleton, La Grande, and Enterprise until her retirement at age 72. She moved to Milton-Freewater five years ago. Mrs. Sartin was the first woman to be inducted into the American Legion at Enterprise. She enjoyed hunting and playing bingo. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Pendleton; the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, both at Enterprise, the Golden Agers and the Milton-Freewater Senior Center.

Survivors include sons, Jim Burns and Joseph Sartin, bother of Milton-Freewater, and John Burns of Wallowa; sisters Cressie DePew of La Grande; LaFrance Grubbs and Verlie French, both of Pendleton, Alloise "Bobbie" Futter, of Pilot Rock, nine granchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Brothers, James Blanchet and John Blanchet, died earlier.
